About forty eight hours after emerging from the puparium, female are able to start laying eggs. However, there are only twelve hours of the adult females life that it can be considered to be a virgin. A female fruit fly can store sperm after a single insemination and use it many times for reproduction. This enables the female fruit fly to be fertile for life and lay many eggs with out needing to mate every time.
