Plantation shutters are interior blinds traditionally made from broad slats of wood mounted in a solid frame. The design of plantation shutters promotes the free flow of air through a structure in a warm climate, while also creating shade to keep the interior of the structure cool. You may also hear plantation shutters referred to as louvres or jalousies, and they come in a range of shapes and sizes to conform with variously-shaped windows and doors. In inclement weather, the shutters could be closed, while in warm weather, they could be opened for fresh air and ventilation. Plantation shutters are louvred panels fixed either inside or outside windows and doors. They originated in America and the West Indies and date back to before the American Civil War. The term "Ante Bellum" means pre-war and is used to describe a style of plantation shutters. The louvre shutters offered by Libra Shutters are "Ante Bellum". What are solid shutters? These are panels that have no louvers. They were originally installed in reveal boxes in pre-Edwardian houses and were only used a couple of times a year, when the owners de-camped for the season. They were not designed to be opened and shut daily like our present designs and that is why so few remain today.  more

"Plantation Shutters" are a type of shutter that was designed and found in the Southern US during the 1800's in the cotton growing areas. It refers to a frame which holds blades or louvers that could be tilted open or closed to control light and help guard against the weather. Originally used on houses externally, Plantation Shutters are now used internally as a superior window dressing to enhance any dcor, whilst still maintaining their original use to help control light and help guard against heat and noise.

Plantation shutters are an elegant window covering made of two or more framed panels of fixed louvers. The louvers within the frame are moved by a rod that is attached on the outside of the louvers. When homeowners want to open or close the louvers, they move the rod up or down. With plantation shutters, homeowners can choose how much light they want to let in and in what direction by angling the louvers. If homeowners want to enjoy the full view of their window, they can pull back the panel of louvers, exposing the entire window. What are the Advantages of Plantation Shutters? Many homeowners choose plantation shutters for a variety of reasons. One main reason is that they like how the shutters give their home a refined appearance. Another benefit is the ability to control the lighting of a room. Homeowners can adjust the louvers to allow as much or as little light as they prefer. Unlike blinds or curtains, shutters do not have gaps for light to enter when shut and they also help to ...  more
