What are Protection Relays?
A protection relay is an intelligent controller involved in the protection of electrical equipment. A protection relay’s function is to detect defective apparatus or other power system conditions of an abnormal or dangerous nature and to initiate appropriate control circuit action. Why are Protection Relays Necessary? Protection relays safeguard various elements of an electrical circuit from a particular condition. When the relay detects a change in status outside of set parameters, the relay will alarm or trip in order to notify or prevent the condition from continuing.
