We still prefer cooking our stuffing in the Turkey.  What we prefer is very simple, torn up fresh white bread, an onion chopped, celery chopped, a tablespoon more or less of butter or margine,, and an apple cut into pieces.  The onion and celery are sauteed with the butter in a frying pan then added to the bread.  The apple is cut into the mixture then it is put into the Turkey cavity.  It is done when the Turkey is done.
