Amoxicillin belongs to a group of drugs called penicillins. Clavulanate potassium promotes the efficacy of amoxicillin by protecting it from being destroyed by certain bacteria. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium combined together form an antibiotic that treats many different infections caused by bacteria.
