Slat beds are a type of bed with built-in bed frames that support a mattress without the use of box springs. Typically, a slat bed has a headboard and a footboard with slats running parallel between them. Slat beds are a common bed design in European style furniture and in many antique beds. The biggest difference between slat beds and traditional box spring support beds is the frame. A slat bed does not have a separate bed frame, but rather the frame is built in to the bed. There are several different styles of slat beds ranging from Old World to modern styles. Bunk beds and loft beds typically employ the design of slat beds as well. The single most important thing to remember when using a slat bed is that the mattress must do all the work so it becomes essential to have a good one.
