What are some adaptations of the rainforest plant “lake reeds”?
Lake reeds adapt readily to their environments. Some adaptations are: a) Ability to extract nutrients underwater, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and sunlight. b) Ability to anchor in loose lake beds to avoid being swept away. c) Long tapered stems to facilitate reproduction and pollenation. d) Some reeds utilize nearby trees as “crutches” and actually climb above the waterline to seek extra sunlight. e) In periods of excessive rain and no sun (due to cloud cover) some species can utilize stored food reserves.
