Gallstones Gallstones are a buildup of some of the chemicals found in bile. These chemicals build up and form hard stones that become trapped in the gallbladder or bile duct. Many people have gallstones and do not even know it. Gallstones don’t cause problems until they become trapped and block the flow of bile from the gallbladder. • Cholecystitis is a condition in which bile becomes trapped in the gallbladder.
