[I’m NOT Italian, by the way, just a great admirer of the humanist Italian cinema of the second half of the 20th century]. My favourite directors are Lina Wertmuller, Pierpaolo Pasolini, Vittorio de Sica, the Taviani brothers, Liliana Cavani, and of course Federico Fellini. Probably the greatest example of the genre is De Sica’s “Il Conformista” [The Conformist], about the impact of fascism on Italy. But then there’s Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Novecento” [1900 – referring to the 20th Century], a sweeping saga of Italian life and politics starring Burt Lancaster and Robert Di Niro.
