What are some good childrens book series?

First you need to ask yourself (and child) some questions! What age and reading level is your child? What are your child’s reading interests? Answer those first. Because something like Harry Potter might be below or above their reading level. Outside of that some good book series for kids are:

  • Harry Potter
  • A series of Unfortunate Events
  • The Lioness Quartet  – or any Tamora Pierce books
  • The Redwall Series – or any Brian Jacques books
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid series
  • Nancy Drew
  • The Hardy Boys
  • Dear America diary series, My Name is America diary series, The Royal Diaries diary series
  • Judy Moody
  • Percy Jackson books
  • The Owls books
  • The Warriors books – the cat ones

There really are quit a few series out there, this is just a list off the top of my head and some might be for older kids – like the Redwall series. So, first get a good understanding of where your child is reading wise and what they like to read then go from there! If they like medieval knights and magic, Tamora Pierce is a great author (personally have all her books, which my son reads). If they like adventure and talking animals than Brian Jacques books are wonderful (also books we own). The diary books are great for kids that like history. I’m sure you get the point.

And don’t discount books that might be “too hard” for a child. I read the first book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy when I was 8, it was harder than what I normally read, but my family encouraged me to finish. And finish I did, the encouragement to not give up pushed me to read more & by the time I hit 6th grade I had a college reading level. Giving a child a book that they have enough passion & enjoyment to read until the end and the encouragement and support to finish is really the most important part of book selection!

There are a couple of ways of doing it. First, you must determine what you will allow your child(ren) to read. Some people will consider the books their kids are reading to be okay, while you would not. Second, after figuring that out, ask people you know what books in that you will allow would be good books. For instance, you decide to that animal books is okay. Well, one famous book that I read and had read to me when I was a little girl was about the little fur family. You are the one in other words who must decide what you will allow. Decide what your parameters are, and go from there.

Since Harry Potter officially ends his career in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows published in July 2007, your children may be interested in finding other children’s book series that will delight them and entertain them just as much. There are actually many fantastic children’s book series for the avid reader, quite as magical as J.K. Rowling’s books. In the definition of “series” used here, we’ll examine books that are connected to each other with a central and building plot, rather than those children’s book series that can be read in any order, such as the Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, or Babysitter’s Club book types. These are certainly worthy choices and may appeal to the child who wants to try out different series before deciding on one they simply must read in its entirety. For older children, especially teens and young adults, J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterful work The Lord of the Rings is a must. Some younger precocious readers may enjoy Tolkien’s trilogy too, but usually the book
