There’s a game called Hullabaloo by Cranium. You put all these little colored mats on the floor and the kids have to move to different ones based on the color or shape of the mat or what animal or item is depicted on it. There’s a little box that plays music and gives the random instructions so you don’t even have to do anything. Then, like musical chairs or a cake walk, the game will end and the kid standing on a certain mat is declared the winner. Each game lasts maybe a minute and kids seem to have a great time. Granted, you’d have to buy this game, but it would make a great present for the birthday girl/boy anyways! Also, the winner is random so it shouldn’t start any fights. My kids can play this forever….

musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, fruit salad. (Fruit salad is where everyone stands in a circle and you go around giving everyone a fruit e.g. apple, banana, orange, apple, banana, orange) and when you call out each fruit name all the kids who are that fruit have to run around the circle back to their position. The last one back goes in the middle- to make a fruit salad. When you call fruit salad everyone runs). With 4 year olds it’s also a good idea to have a few games where everyone’s a winner (and judge whether it’s a good idea to have some of the more competitive games based on the group- some kids love them and other kids really don’t like them. If there are kids in the group who don’t like them they could do some crafty activities while the other kids play): e.g. pass the parcel, a scavenger hunt, make up a play/show You could put out some plain sweet biscuits (or cupcakes), ice them with different coloured icing and give the kids all different lollies to make animals/
