What are some good reasons not to divorce?
One very good reason not to divorce, particularly for men, is that they often seem to do better married. One very good reason not to divorce, particularly for women, is they often become worse off financially. Most people (but not all) seem to thrive when they are committed to one person. “Except in very extreme conflict-ridden families — and most families do not fit this situation — children are better off when their parents stay married,” writes Michele Weiner Davis in The Divorce Remedy. Children do better in school and avoid problems like teenage pregnancy, drugs and delinquency. Married men make better fathers, and provide guidance, role modeling and financial support. “Marriage is good for most adults. As compared to single, widowed, or divorced people, married people are healthier, have better sex lives, engage in fewer high-risk activities such as substance abuse, live longer, and are happier,” Ms. Davis writes.
