What are some of Beethovens darkest songs?
I agree with Jay in that none of Beethoven’s music is sullen. He may have wrestled with dark thoughts, the foreboding opening to his 5th Symphony being an example of this conflict between two opposite forces that lies at the heart of many of his greatest works. I think particularly some of his late Quartets and Sonatas seem to possess an undercurrent of deep sadness but the end results in his music were always life affirming and in my opinion no one else brings us more closer to the divine. Check out his choral masterpiece, the ‘Missa Solemnis’. Here are three more examples of his genius: Great Fugue in B flat Major, Op. 133 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSs2QSfuH… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnqua07a0… Central movement from Piano Trio No.5 in D, Op. 70 No. 1
