Zicam is marketed as a homeopathic remedy, and consumers are not warned of any potentially adverse side effects. Zicam Cold Remedy products have a potentially serious and unexpected side effect: permanent or long lasting loss of sense of smell (anosmia). Zicam’s manufacturer has blamed the anosmia as a symptom of a patient’s cold, however, in many cases, the loss of the sense of smell does not return. Since 1999, the FDA has received about 130 reports of long lasting or permanent loss of sense of smell due to Zicam.
