Athens considered itself the birthplace of democracy but a vast class of slaves supported a smaller class of free citizens. Another thing is that women were not allowed to vote and had few rights outside the home. The ancient Greeks considered their worst demons female. Like the furies, the harpies, or Medusa. Also Athens was head of the Delian Confederacy. This was a collection of free Greek city states that were part of a confederation led by Athens for protection. But as time went by it became obligatory to be part of it. So Athens unfairly dominated a lot of smaller Greek states. I hope that this has been a help to you.
