What are some tips and suggestions to avoiding or removing power line (ground loop) hum from my sound system?

Electricity always seeks the path of least resistance in its quest to complete a circuit. When several pieces of sound equipment are plugged into different power sources a difference in voltage may appear between the two (or more) different AC power circuits’ grounds. The cabling in the sound system connects these two different circuits together. When this happens AC current flows between the two circuits on the ground wire (or shield) in the sound system and causes a hum to occur.
