Thanks to advances in optical technology there are now sunglasses and lenses available that are sports specific. They are tailor made to the requirements of golfers, winter and water sports enthusiasts, athletes, mountain climbers, tennis players, cricketers and many other outdoor pursuits. Sunglasses with prescription lenses have been available for a many years. In their early days the prescription lenses were made from optical quality glass and that made them vulnerable to breakage. The added danger of damage occurring to the eyewear while engaged in sport with the possibility of a fragment of glass entering the eye made these early sunglasses unsuitable for many sports particularly ball games. Fortunately, the development of a suitable tinted plastic prescription lens followed soon afterwards.
