What are the advantages and disadvantages of double digging?
Advantages – Rapid improvement of heavy [or otherwise difficult] soil – No off-site material required [off site material may not be required in a non-dug system also] – Limits area disturbed – Provides exercise to the gardener Disadvantages – Very labor intensive – Easily compacted if walked on – May disturb roots of trees nearby – Difficult over large areas – Destroys existing soil structure, mycelia, etc.
