What are the advantages of using infrared light as opposed to red light?
In the past, infrared lights offered a much higher output than red LEDs. However, today the difference is only small. Infrared light is perhaps better suited to detecting dark or transparent objects (low reflection). The advantage of red light is that it is visible and easy to adjust. The light beam can be seen on the object. This is also the reason why most new sensors use red light instead of infrared light.
