What are the best hardware/software apps for handwriting recognition?

Windows 7 has good support for handwriting as well as handwriting recognition. with an external tablet input device (like a Wacom or a Monoprice Tablet), this is a great way of capturing handwriting. In terms of software, Microsoft OneNote as well as Evernote are having good support for handwriting / handwriting recognition. Tablet Input devices are a good alternative to the mouse. I have stopped using an external mouse. The digital pen is ergonomically sound and helps with RSI. Having a Tablet Input device is a good mechanism for software based whiteboards. Discussions on a call are easier to visualize with drawings that capture key areas. I see myself highlighting and annotating simple block diagrams on a LiveMeeting or a Messenger Desktop Share.

Microsoft (in my experience) has had the best, highest-quality handwriting recognition that I’ve used in a long time. It’s built right into Windows, so if you’re looking to use it from an API, it’s right there. A good way to test it out is with Microsoft OneNote, which does handwriting recognition from tablet input or via OCR.

Phatware also has PhatPad. WritePad and PhatPad are the only apps currently to have handwriting recognition. Notes Plus will be getting it this year.
