I’m not sure elevating his matress would help. You elevate the matress to allow the mucus to drain to his tummy. Putting him on his side wouldn’t do that. I cosleep, so elevating the matress wasn’t an option for us. Thankfully we had a crib insert that was elevated and I just put him on that in our bed. I’ve heard of people just putting books at one side under the crib. My son got a cold at 11 wks and this is what his pediatrican told me. At even 11 wks, their cough isn’t strong enough to cough out the phlem. That is why the strange breathing (it sounds quite scary to me) is present. The phlem gets stuck in the back of their little throats. I thought about buying a new aspirator (for cleanliness) to try and suck what I could from his throat. I’d ask the pediatrican if that’s ok. My son had his cold less than a week. This is what I did based on the advice of his pediatrican: run a vaporizer (use only water, he’s not old enough for the vapors) use the saline spray and aspirator baby vapo
