It depends on who you talk to… I was always taught in school that the CPU is the whole computer (not including ancilliaries like keyboard and monitor). So that would be everything in the computer case pretty much, which would include the processor, motherboard, ram, hard drive, etc. Since then people have told me that it is purely the processor, of which I cannot name the components. I think it is one of those acronyms that have two meanings. Central Processing Unit meaning either the processor or what you would think of as the computer, depending on whether you are a computer specialist or a 56 year old female teacher furrowing her brow while she reads her teaches ed guide and tries to understand the technology that she is supposed to be teaching to comparatively computer savvy kids.
