What are the differences between the Labour and Conservative government?

I read somewhere that a psychology faculty carried out an experiment in which it was established that people tend to react emotionally to political questions rather than applying reason and I think there’s a lot of truth in that. The essential difference between Labour and Conservative policies, traditionally, is that Conservatives favour what is called an ‘abstentionist’ approach and try to create decentralised areas of operation with minimal legislation to monitor businesses and council services while Labour believe that a strong central government is necessary to maintain social equity and will enact as much legislation as is necessary to achieve this. ‘New’ Labour is generally viewed to have attempted a ‘Third Way’ in which decision making would be decentralised but that strong legislation governing the way in which this could be applied was seen as a prerecquisite.
