What are the differences between the primary and the secondary care sectors?
The primary care sector covers the services provided by GP’s, dentists, opticians, pharmacists and community services. The secondary care sector covers the services provided by hospitals. Some commentators also make a further distinction, the tertiary care sector, which covers the services provided by specialised care units that tend to be based in larger hospitals.
