As of now, there are two known forms of nuclear energy. One of them is called fission, and the other is called fusion. The two forms are fundamentally different in the way they result in generation of nuclear energy. The type of reaction commonly used today to derive nuclear energy is fission. The modus operandi of a fission reaction is to break down the nucleus of a heavy element to release energy, nuclear energy. The energy released is used to work a turbine to generate the required output. The fusion reaction is not generally used for regular generation. The fusion reaction, as the term suggests, involves bringing together two light nuclei to form a heavy nucleus, with energy being released in the process. Nuclear fusion is the standard reaction seen in the core of the sun, where hydrogen atoms are converted to helium, releasing energy in the process. Fusion reactions are not commonly seen because they require extremely high temperatures.
