What are the different solvents used in paper chromatography?
If you’re doing the experiment I think you’re doing, you’ll need to make a mixture of petroleum ether, acetone, and water to use for your solvent because chlorophyll and the carotenoids are soluble in this and therefore they will travel up the paper. These are very volitile and flammable and should not be breathed in. Leaf pigments are not soluble in water alone.
