The musical does start with the birth of Elphaba, but then it jumps to her going to Shiz. The musical also doesn’t spend as much time at Shiz setting up how Elphaba is treated like an outcast, there’s just a big musical number about how Galinda and everyone else are mean to her. What happens later in the book when Elphaba is on the run from the guard is virtually nonexistent in the musical (and the musical has no mention of the mysterious child who follows Elphaba around…). The musical moves much faster and focuses more on the Elphaba/Fiyero relationship and Elphaba’s feelings when Fiyero is captured. In general, the book is MUCH darker than the musical, which is understandable (they want the musical to be family-friendly). The book contains a lot of “grotesque” (in the literary sense) elements, such as Nessa having no arms instead of just being paralyzed and the creepy sexual stage show that the group of friends goes to see.
