What are the effects of fish oil therapy on the outcomes of renal transplant?
Conclusion Statement There is insufficient evidence to support fish oil therapy to improve renal function and patient or graft survival for kidney transplant patients. Limited evidence shows potential benefit of fish oil in reducing oxidative stress and improving lipid profiles. Evidence Summary Study Characteristics Two positive quality systematic review and meta-analysis (Tatsioni et al, 2005; Lim et al, 2007) with almost the same set of 16 RCTs examining the effects of fish oil therapy on the outcomes of kidney transplant. There are no new RCTs published after completion of these systematic reviews. These RCTs generally were small (less than 45 patients per group), and many had important methodological limitations. Method of randomization and allocation concealment was unclear or inadequate in most. Similarly, blinding of investigators and outcome assessors was extremely poor. Lost to follow-up ranged from 0% to 32%. Patient Characteristics A total of 830 kidney transplant patients
