Progestins are a class of synthetic compunds that are similar to progesterone – but have differences in the chemical composition and make up. They are what is known as “analogs” to progesterone and the human body reacts to progestins like it does to foreign substances. (They have been developed by pharmaceutical companies so as to make them patentable and a source of revenue. Their effects however, can be quite harmful – see below.
