What are the employment opportunities of mental health counselors in Kentucky?
Our Mental Health Counseling graduates have always found employment in a variety of community agencies such as social services, probation and parole, spouse abuse, rape crisis, nursing homes, comprehensive care centers, juvenile group homes, day treatment centers, chemical dependency treatment centers, juvenile justice programs, domestic violence programs, advocacy services, psychiatric hospitals, homeless shelters, prisons, family preservation programs, etc. The passage of the Certified Professional Counselor (CPC) law in 1996 which became th Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) law in 2002, only increased the visibility, status, and employability of Mental Health Counseling graduates who obtain the LPCC. Also, private practice is available for those who hold the LPCC, and the department recommends that all Mental Health Counseling majors pursue the LPCC. Various career related publications list counseling as one of the fastest growing professions for the future.
