What are the feelings that make you explore music of ancient civilizations and different cultures?
The process has always been this: I heard an instrument on a record or at a concert and then felt such a strong wish to learn to play it that I traveled to that country and tried to find a teacher. This year was no different as I was in Morocco again to learn to play a new instrument. The whole process continues. In November I will go to Japan again to learn to play a new instrument. Although very strange, I cannot analyze or explain it. Have you studied Turkish culture or music? Do you play any Turkish instruments? I never learned to play a Turkish instrument but I have listened to a lot of Turkish music and have traveled to Turkey many times. This summer I went on a 6,000-kilometer road trip in Turkey starting in Antalya and then going through Konya, Kayseri, Erzurum, Kars, Van, Hakkari, Mt. Nemrut (in Adıyaman) and Cappadocia.
