What are the functions of the immune system, and what is an autoimmune disease?
IMMUNE SYSTEM is a protection mechanism of an organism against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that would love to invade the body. The immune system is very complex and are made up of several organs, hence it is a system — thymus, spleen, lymph system, bone marrow, white blood cells, antibodies, complement system & hormones. An autoimmune disease occurs when your immune system attacks itself by mistake, and you can get sick. Autoimmune diseases can affect connective tissue in your body (the tissue which binds together body tissues and organs). Autoimmune disease can affect many parts of your body, like your nerves, muscles, endocrine system (system that directs your body’s hormones and other chemicals), and digestive system.
