Kalhor: Well, in Persian music we have melodic forms called dastgahs. We have 12 of these modes. And each dastgah is divided into smaller parts called gooshehs. Each dastgah has several of these, sometimes as many as 60 or 70. These gooshehs, which are anywhere from 30 seconds to 4 minutes in length, are the primary basis for improvisation in Persian music. Shujaat Husain Khan: Indian music is slightly different. In a raga we only have a certain amount of notes. While you’re playing a particular rag, you can only touch those particular notes. When you first started playing with each other in Ghazal, was it difficult to overcome these differences? Kalhor: No. It just flowed. Shujaat is a very good improviser within his music, so we didn’t have any problems. We tried to find something really, really international.
