There were not many geographical benefits. However, the Aztecs were the big guys around their area. This means several things: 1) They had the farthest to fall 2) They had the most loot, spoils, and treasure 3) They conquered other tribes, meaning the invading Spanish conquistadors played other various tribes (such as the tlaxcala) against their Aztec overlords, helping incite insurrections and rebellion, lessening Aztec resistance. However, in a purely physical sense, Tenochtitlan would have been very difficult to invade, which didnt matter as the Spanish were greeted like gods and not fought until they took Montezuma hostage in his castle and then killed him.
