Short answer: The guideline is “keep the e-mail, including the attachments, as small as possible.” Long answer: The limits we have in place are applicable to the message as a whole, rather than attachments alone. The Wake Forest University e-mail system is a shared University resource. To keep the system a viable one for all users, there is a limit on the size of messages passing through the Wake Forest e-mail system. It is recommended that you do not send a file larger than 1-2 MB to eliminate possible problems in sending or receiving mail attachments. Very large mail attachments may be rejected by the recipient’s mail server and cause their e-mail box to exceed the mail quota; the e-mail with attachment may be bounced back to the sender as “undeliverable”. Large attachments may also cause the recipient’s e-mail to “hang” when he or she attempts to download the message.
