What Are the Health Effects of Exposure to Arsenic?

0

No long-term health effects have been reported from living in communities with elevated soil arsenic concentrations. (Valberg et al. 1997) Long-term exposure to arsenic at high concentrations in drinking water, which is absorbed at a much higher rate than arsenic from soil, (greater than 50 micrograms per liter), is associated with nerve damage in the arms and legs, several skin conditions, anemia and heart disease. (ATSDR 2000) Studies of long-term exposure to very high arsenic concentrations in drinking water (e.g., 600 micrograms per liter) indicate that this type of exposure may cause a particular type of skin cancer, bladder, lung, kidney, and liver cancer. (Anderson et al. 1999) Results of a New York State Department of Health study in 1986-1987 of all types of cancer indicated that that there was not an increased number of cancer cases in adults and children in the Village of Middleport.
