What are the important things a teacher has to do during the day?

The better question might be “What things do teachers do that are not that important?”  As teachers, we wear so many hats, from referee to psychologist, from coach to parent, that every step and action we take is absorbed by our students.  Even the tiniest part of our day can be the most important for our students, and we need to realize how that will effect them.

To answer the question, one of the most important things we can do is create a safe learning environment for our students.  What is a safe learning environment?  great question.  A safe learning environment is both physical and mental.  Students need to feel like they are physically safe in our class.  If they believe they will be hit, bullied, or hurt by someone or something in the class or school, they are unlikely to learn.  In a similar vein, if students feel like they will be laughed at, picked on, or excluded for answers or risks they take in the classroom, they will not take those risks.  Those risks that our students don’t take directly effect their learning.  Those answers, those “failures”, for lack of a better term, are the basis for a lot of their deeper learning.  If students don’t feel like they are safe enough and supported enough to take those risks, then student’s learning will suffer.

In order to create this, you must help the students foster a sense of community.  They need to see that when one person learns, we all learn.  they need to realize that they can learn from others, and others can learn from them.  They need to understand that almost every answer is valid, and even the effort of giving an answer is valuable and worth discussion.  when you reach that community level, it is amazing to see the help and support the students give one another.  They are a family, and they are in this journey of (insert grade level) together.  competition, while good in some settings and circumstances, must take a back seat to cooperation.

As far as other important parts, teachers must be well versed in their content areas and lesson plans.  If you are not ready as a teacher, your teaching will be sub-par at best.  It is crucial to plan for success.  Finally, I believe routines are crucial to a well run classroom.  When the students understand the expectations, the class runs smoothly and transitions are a part of, they don’t take away from, the learning.

I did not understand what you wanted to know. May be you are thinking what teachers do in non-teaching times. I am not gonna say anything about myself. My mom was a teacher. Here are the things she used to do:

  • counted cross stitch
  • sewing
  • some crafting
  • read
  • daily walks
  • hiking
  • working in yard and garden
  • reading
  • playing with dogs
  • hanging out with friends
  • cooking
  • house projects
  • messing around online

What is your question?
