What are the Kodiak Bears adaptations to cold?
Most Kodiak bears will hibernate for the winter if they get enough fat during their feeding seasons. If it is warm enough and there is a food source up to 25% of Kodiak male bears will not hibernate. Incidentally a Kodiak bear doesn’t hibernate like a ground squirrel. They will wake periodically during the winter and they may even leave their dens for short times. Females must be in a den to give birth. A Kodiak bear when born weighs about one pound!
