There are two LEDs on the communicator and one external message indicator light. LED 1 should always be on. It is green when there is a satellite in view. Otherwise it is red. If it is off, it means the communicator does not have power. LED 2 is amber when a new email has arrived. The external LED (message indicator light) works exactly the same as LED 2.
