What are the lyrics to the song that Omar sang at the end of “New Amsterdam”?
The most famous recording of it was by Nat King Cole in 1948 (see below.) This song was written about a guy who was probably the first “hippie”. He hung out at what was possibly the first shopping mall as we know it, in Los Angeles in the 1940’s. He had long hair, no shoes and evidently preached the secular gospel of love to passers by. Someone brought him to the attention of the song writer, or told him about this guy, and the song resulted. Artist: Nat King Cole -from his “The Greatest Of Nat King Cole” LP-Capitol SLB-6803 -peak Billboard position # 1 for 8 weeks in 1948 -competing versions charted by Frank Sinatra (#7), Sara Vaughn (#8), and -Dick Haymes (#11).
