What are the main activities and events organised by the South African embassy in the UAE?
The main role of the embassy is to promote South Africa to our host country. Aside from consular services, we also deal with signing agreements, arranging for various delegations to visit SA, and meeting with industry and government representatives. Our flagship event for the year is the Freedom Day celebration on 27 April. We also support SABCo in hosting the South African Family Day. Any South Africans wishing me to meet them at a gathering can send me a request by email (abbaomary@foreign.gov.za). What are the things that you miss most from home? In the current heat I miss the crisp air of a winter’s day in the Highveld. I miss the game reserves – we used to visit the Kruger National Park at least once a year. I am an avid media consumer and I miss the full range of magazines and newspapers from home, and South African cuisine. And of course, I miss my close friends dearly.
