What are the modalities of Local Drug Delivery systems in Periondontal Therapy ?
A variety of drug delivery systems have been used in Periodontal therapy. Historically tetracyclines and metronidazoles were filled in hollow cupraphane or cellulose fibres and inserted subgingivally. These drugs were then slowly released and acted on the subgingival microflora. Presently preloaded fibres are available which release the drug slowly over periods of 48 to 72 hours. Drugs impregnated are tetracyclines, metronidazoles and chlorhexidine. Commerical products available are Actisite (Tetracycline) and the Perio Chip (Chlorhexidine).
