What are the most common complications from surgery?
Hernia surgery is the most common type of general surgery performed in the United States. It is quite safe and complications (with the exception of recurrence) are rare. Chronic pain sometimes results in the area of the surgery from nerve irritation or scar tissue formation. As with any surgery, there is the risk of infection or bleeding. If the surgery is done using a laparoscope, there are risks from general anesthesia and rare, but serious, risks of damage to internal organs caused by the laparoscopic instruments.
