What are the most delicious Greek food and drinks?
Apart from moussaka that everybody knows and is a little fussy to cook it for scratch, I would suggest spetsofai (stew with peppers and sausage), yemista (stuffed tomatoes/or other vegetables with rice, herbs, optional mince) and giouvetsi (baked lamb/beef or even chicken in clay pot with orzo). These dishes are relativaly easy to prepare and are ideal for having guests over. Some of my favorites are also spanakorizo (spinach with rice) fasolada (bean soup with carrots and celery) and plain lentil soup with garlic, onion and laurel leaves, vinegar optional; but are more “everyday dishes”, and happen to be vegetarian. Ouzo or raki are preferebly served with appetisers. You could use regular wine or better, greek retsina. An interesting ‘meze’ that goes well with raki and is served in Crete would be: sliced kaseri cheese dripped with honey and walnuts. P.S.: Tommorrow I’m cooking okra and baking little bougatsas (phyllo pastry filled with cream)! Have a nice meal!
