Santa Cruz is my absolute favorite place to go to the beach in Northern (Central really) California. Santa Monica Beach in Los Angeles is awesome too. The beaches near San Diego are excellent, and the water is pretty warm in the heat of August, for the Pacific anyway. I’ve never been to Venice Beach, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, or Laguna Beach though. I’m sure those would be fantastic too. Google all of them and find out! Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz are the best for surfing by the way.

Keep in mind beaches in Northern California (Half Moon, Santa Cruz, etc) are much colder than those in Southern California. So for lounging and playing in the water, I prefer LA beaches. Santa Cruz and Carmel are more scenic. Santa Cruz has a national park. In Carmel, the red woods go right up to the beach and it’s beautiful.
