What are the organisations?
The two main organisations are the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (the SOBHD) and the Scottish Official Highland Dancing Association (the SOHDA). There are a few others as well. The role of these organisations is to govern their members. The SOBHD is the largest organisation, and is the one that governs the yearly World Championships. They have worldwide affiliates. In addition to the governing bodies, there are also several teaching organisations, including the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) and the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance (SDTA). There are few differences between the teachers organisations; all teachers, despite their certification, must affiliate themselves with a governing body.
