What are the origins of salmon farming?
Although pioneers began farming salmon and trout in Norway in the 1960s, the salmon farming industry itself got underway only in the 1970s after technical problems had been overcome. With the Fish Farming Act of 1973, the Norwegian government began licensing salmon farms, which grew from 13 in 1974 to 84 in 1977. As the Norwegian government continued issuing new licenses, the number of farms rose to 301 in 1983 that produced an average of 30-40 tonnes each-17,298 tonnes in all. By 1984, when 354 farms produced 29,500 tonnes of salmon worth about $108 million, salmon farming had become Norway ‘s second most valuable fishery after cod. During the 1980s, as successful salmon farmers began bridling at government restrictions, they began exporting technology, equipment, and financing to Canada , the United States , and Chile .
