What are the P.E.O. Sisterhood connections?
The P.E.O. Sisterhood, one of the pioneer societies of women, was founded shortly after the Civil War in 1869 on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Nearly 130 years later, it has become an international organization with broad philanthropic and cultural aims and an ever-increasing interest in furthering educational opportunities for women. P.E.O. is entirely independent and has no affiliation with any external or benevolent organization, and currently has over 240,000 women. The seven women who founded P.E.O. are referred to as the Seven Sisters. Their chief biographer was a classmate of theirs named Dillon Payne.
