What are the potential benefits of genomics research?
Genomics research will enable us, for the first time, to grasp the language of life and to understand, for example, the tiny genetic differences that determine the colour of an eye, the shape of a mouth, and above all else, our vulnerability to certain diseases.Conditions like cancer, heart disease, allergies and arthritis are caused by an interaction of genes and the environment.Exposure to radiation or smoke, for example, can trigger genetic changes in our cells that could cause disease.By fully understanding genes, we will be able to improve diagnosis of diseases, detect genetic predispositions for certain diseases and develop new medicines.
