What are the principal manmade sources of airborne mercury emissions in the State?
Approximately 10,500 pounds of mercury is estimated to be emitted into the air in the State of Illinois each year. Of this amount, about 7,500 pounds (71%) comes from the 22 coal and oil-fired electric power plants in the State. Large industrial boilers and incinerators are the next largest category and account for another 2,000 pounds (19%).
